BROKEN CIVILIZATION

by Bernard W. Bail, M.D.

At this point in time,seventy-five percent of the American people are not happy with their government.  John Dean of the Nixon era writes about "broken government". He writes of the erosion of the constitution, the bill of rights, and the rule of lawAlthough it is said we are a nation living according to the rule of law, I believe Dean would say, and many along with him, that this is not so.  In theory yes, but in practice it is otherwise.  The question is why and how has this come about.  Dean and others have their theories but I believe not one of them has come to the crucial heart of the problem for the problem is large and more sweeping than broken government, broken constitution, and broken rule of law.

The current administration follows all the leaders of the past, even unto the far reaches of Paleolithic man, whose only rule of law to follow was his own desire and the physical strength to attain it.

Government is a facsimile of the family in that a group of people is gathered to accomplish a task.  Hopefully in a family there are guidelines or rules that the parents set, if not consciously then somewhere unconsciously in their psyche, but consciously followed out.  Sometime in the past when men and women came together, bred and had families, certain rules were in existence.  These rules were not so much written as understood, and when these clusters gathered into villages and tribes, likewise rules or codes must have developed to keep order, if nothing else.

When the Jews came up with the Ten Commandments, life had already become complex for these simple yet embracing sentences showed the way life was to be lived.  However, even codification of values or cultural practices did not and do not stop them from being broken then or now.  This is true of all cultures, of all races, of all religions - each great category with its general laws and its cultural specifications and its moral values.  All people everywhere are able to know what is correct and what is the punishment for transgression.  Yet transgressions are more than ever in fashion or perhaps today, because of the means of communication and recording devices of whatever nature, when there is no place for secrecy, transgressions are honored as the saying goes "more in the breech” than ever.

I find it interesting that currently social scientists are coming to the conclusion, consistent with mine, that family structure in the future will not be what it is today --  maybe no marriages, maybe other arrangements for men and women and the children they may have -- other living arrangements.  These ideas are only adaptations to the evident fact that marriages are not working just as it is evident that governments are not working.  Some kinds of later governments that do not work will collapse into dictatorships of some kind.  So far this has not happened to the Scandinavian people and their approach therefore must be studied more deeply.  But, due to the immigration of different cultures, they are not free from increasing difficulties.  There are the English and their glorious "Magna Carta" but with population mix, which promises to be the wave of the future everywhere, they may lose that advertisement of the country of fair play, justice and so on.  The only solution man seems to have to deal with trouble is to go to war and war is all about profit.  Wars were more transparent in the past - simply to take the riches of the invaded land, to take the women, to take the gold, to take slaves, and to have the conquered country pay tribute.

I do not think that it is the same today because we are not so crass as to take slaves and openly loot a country.  We do it with sophistication, with financial experts who know how to accomplish that task and with the knowledge that the country - ours, China, Russia - have the military might to do more crudely and directly what it wants to do secretly behind closed doors.  Everyone conspires; no one's hands are clean, from the lions, to the jackals, to the vultures.  There is room for almost everyone at the table except the helpless, the poor, the disenfranchised.  Since this is how it appears to be going and no one seems to have a solution, we ask why all this is happening? At least I have heard of no solution -- only preparations in every country to curtail freedoms and prepare for war - a different kind of war, a more dangerous war since there is no target to bomb to smithereens, only ideas that conflict with other ideas as to how life should be lived.

My theory about man's current situation is that we are all living in a geocentric universe.  Though Galileo proved the sun, not the earth, was the center of the universe, this scientific fact was fought by the most powerful religion in the West for centuries.

Any analyst, even though not using or even cognizant of my theories, would testify that patients are unwilling to give up their geocentric ideas and attitudes, those antediluvian views -- views they never knew they had -- though to hold onto them will continue to make patients sick, their lives miserable and their environment a shambles.  Any analyst knows that merely giving an interpretation, even one the patient can repeat intellectually, is of no use unless there is an emotional change.  To think that an institution like the church was against the truth to the point of killing people to sustain a lie must give us all serious concern about what we - mankind - must do.  We must realize that the center of the universe within ourselves, the geocentric connection held by the individual and certainly reinforced by mother and father, is not any human being.  Geocentric ideas are the ideas that everyone has and believes today, that mothers are the center of the universe.  Wars especially are a good litmus test for when men die the word "Mom" is on their dying breath.  This scenario is also played out on the national scene where the government is the parent that wishes the people (the child) to believe in its infallibility, its centrality, its reservation and the preservation of a balance that puts it in power.  The church has been in power, or the parent has been in power, since time began.  But people have to know that government will do everything it can to hide the truth from the people with a lie, that it will do this for the good of the people or for the reason that one cannot tell the people too much.  Issues of lies, of truth:  men tell lies and men must accept the responsibility for the consequences.  The divine is concerned only with the truth and the divine has manifested its laws in the physical universe of man and in his internal universe, which is his unconscious.

In my experience as an analyst the people (patients) can stand to be told the truth and must be told the truth in order to obtain a state of health.  Patients cannot really take more lies, which will only make them sicker.  Everything connected with people who are told lies, like children, becomes more broken for broken people can only do damage.  Government is not a living substance.  Government is not a human being.  It is people who make institutions break because people are broken in their personalities, in their emotions, in their minds.  They can only break what they work at or in whether it is a government, a company, a church, a family, a relationship, etc.

What has to be done by man is nothing short of the greatest shift.  He has to shift his life from a fundamental belief in the geocentric theory to a heliocentric view of life.  He must give up living in the useless and wrong paradigm that the world holds currently -- that mothers are the center of life and secondarily the father, that they are the caretakers of new lives.  It is true that they are the caretakers but not the owners of children born to them.  The children are broken upon the rocks of the mother's unconscious projections and, to a lesser degree, the father's.

So it is with government.  All men in government must come to realize they are not the alpha and omega; they are the caretakers of the people, a sacred charge.  The times indicate the government as mother, like parents, is broken.

For mankind it would seem to be this fear that the unconscious is the abyss yet it is the place where the divine can be found.  The world has been looking for God in the wrong place all these thousands of years even though the Christ told us the kingdom of God is within.  He meant the unconscious of everyone.

In the unconscious of almost all men and women lies an enormous fear, a result of this moment of imprinting which is always connected to shock, dread, terror and abiding fear.

Unscrupulous leaders may be able to tap into this now unconscious, repressed entity, fear, and when they do they may hold a whole population thrall to an ancient trauma that the populous never wants to face again.  It is the facing of this fetal trauma that is a key problem in the solution of that trauma.

Broken governments the world over manned by broken people can only come up with broken solutions so in the end it repeats what has always been, "I want what you have and I mean to take it because I can".  Dressed up in suits, the raft of so-called human efforts by the United Nations and its variety of commissions, are doomed to fail.  They are only adjustments to a flawed mankind.

A real emotional change can only come about if a person comes to understand and believe the primacy of the divine - a heliocentric idea - and assigns mother and father the role of caretakers.  This is not to diminish their importance but to emphasize it.  Therefore, an antediluvian view is that of a geocentric view of the world and, until confronted, people are not aware they hold this conviction.

Conclusion:

At this time in the history of man we stand at a crossroads as to what direction we shall take and must take.  Civilization is not at a crossroads.  It has always been broken, like governments; it is not the institutions that must decide, all of us must decide.

For it is clear from the ideas I have put forward in my scientific work, my book The Mother's Signature A Journal of Dreams(2007), and the essays on my website "www.bernardbailmd.com," that all of us are enslaved by our imprint, a mark that lies in the unconscious unseen, unheard, reaching out to our disadvantage into every aspect of our lives.

Note this; if we are slaves to our imprint we cannot but be slaves to any entity that prevails through strength.

This has been the truth for thousands of years. We have been and are slaves to our intellect that can manufacture philosophy, science, painting - these so called highest virtues of man - and it can manufacture lies and other rationalizations for vile behavior to the weak.  Intellectual invention is still the slave of the imprint.

Too long this worship of new inventions, new modalities of entertainment, new methods of waging war that impoverishes a country -- impoverishes all of us ultimately.  Even those whose good fortune might be envied, those who do not know hunger or dread or fear, they also are slaves to the imprint in their unconscious.

All of us have to gather up our courage and look into the abyss and wait until it looks back and gives us the true answers that lie within.  It is the only place where truth resides.  All else is misperception; all else is self-deception.  It is self-deception that has brought us all to the crossroads wherein we stand.

Man has to become adult and this can only be done by looking long and deeply within.  The future of man is not in outer space, another self-deception; it is looking for the first time at the mysteries of inner space.  There is where the true treasures are and have always been.

To begin, all of us everywhere, in the turmoil of Africa, the maelstrom of Indonesia, the race and pollution in China, in exhausted Europe and in a cowed and fearful America, must sit silently and think about the trajectory of our lives, trace out the repetition of failures in relationships, in the so-called affairs of the business world, and the religious world.  All the failures are not, as some would have you think, God's anger with us.  All the failures are our own because of our misperception of first cause and the tremendous need in everyone to disclaim actions that become disasters.

The beginning of the path out of these disasters can be found in sitting for fifteen minutes alone, silently recollecting and recounting our repeated sorrows and losses and then trying to see how our assumptions, misperceptions, and desires have corrupted the real truth, and in this survey try to find the pattern.  Let us begin to try it.

It is only man's arrogance and omnipotence that cannot estimate our vanishing from this earth plane.  Yet consider how many cultures and civilizations have been lost in this way that we do not even know about.    Vanity, swaggering, and arrogance are really no option for us at this time.  We are truly at the crossroads of our destiny.

Addendum:

One thousand people from every country in the world attended a conference in Valencia, Spain sponsored by the U.N. and speeches were given by leading climatologists who were honored with a Nobel Peace Prize.  Briefly their conclusion was that climate changes must be dealt with immediately or else consequences for the world would be devastating.

The permafrost in Alaska is melting and houses are crumbling.  Methane can be accessed from lakebeds.  Bubbles have been examined off the Santa Barbara coast.  They turned out to be bubbles of methane.  The oceans of the world have large beds of methane frozen.  Should these oceans of methane be released the chances are that the planet would go up in flames.  Methane is a highly flammable gas.  What are the important powers doing now?  What are the movers and shakers of the world doing now?  Still making bombs.  Still making tanks and airplanes.  Still making machine guns and mortars.  Still waging war.  Will the world go up in flames?  Armageddon, the fire, next time.  The planet would remain lifeless for endless millenniums as it did before life appeared.  Will the creator have a more informed and less self-destructive population?  And the pity of it all is that there is the belief that science will save us.

Sending man into space will not save us.
Sending man to Jupiter will not save us.
Finding the genome of the world will not save us.
Rock concerts will not save us.
Hollywood will not save us no matter how many tears we may shed at a movie or even if we stand up and cheer at a movie.
Computers inventions to the nth degree will not save us.

It seems to me we are determined to have our Pompeii.

All that will save us is to plunge into the unconscious and realize we are all enslaved by what is unknown there.  The world is now doing Sartre's “No Exit.”  I say the door is open.  We must, with heaving chest, go through the door into the abyss of the truth.  That and nothing else will save us.
