THE ROAD OUT OF DYSTOPIA
by Bernard W. Bail, M.D.
DEFINITION
Dystopia:
A hypothetical place, state, or situation in which conditions and the quality
of life are dreadful. (Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary)
PREFACE:
DYSTOPIA / THE MOTHER’S IMPRINT
The
definition of dystopia might also be applied to emotional and mental
disturbance. Anyone who has ever consulted an analyst or psychiatrist would say
that dystopia describes exactly how they feel.
I
daresay few people read Aesop's Fables anymore. It would seem a book more
suited for simpler times. When I was a child I read these cautionary tales with
delight, although I probably did not understand the significance of the
stories. I came to appreciate them later in life; there was a simple
satisfaction looking on the world and the follies man commits, and that I
committed, and recalling, "Oh, that's the story of the grasshopper and the
ant," etc.
It
astonishes me to realize that human behavior has not changed all that much
between then and now. We are given men and women, like Aesop, of great
prescience and great talent. Some of them have written books appropriate for
our times with cautionary warnings for our times. Some of these books are
fanciful, describing utopias—scenarios of how men and women might ideally live.
In fact, some of these utopias have been tried. To my knowledge none have
succeeded. One of these talented men, James Hilton, wrote a book called Lost
Horizon which described a utopian society. It made a beautiful and
compelling movie. It is a simple story of how good may prevail, but only if it
is hidden away from the ills of the world, the ills of mankind.
Along
with Lost Horizon came the Aldous Huxley book Brave New World. I
imagine that the devastation of World War I played a large part in the creation
of these books. Then along came World War II followed by George Orwell's book 1984.
Huxley takes a libidinal view where one could get besotted with spectacle and
entertainment leading to boredom and triviality until people no longer cared
about anything. Orwell takes a darker view. Author and critic Chris Hedges
thinks Orwell’s view is more accurate, and so do I. The important fact is that
both paths lead to submission.
What
Huxley and Orwell say and what Hedges emphasizes is that society is slowly on
its way to becoming an Orwellian society. The absolutely clear thing about this
process, which is described by Hedges, is how this has happened. Hedges’ book, The
Death of the Liberal Class, and his blogs show that mankind is
unconsciously aiding in its own enslavement. It could even be said that the
unconscious of mankind reveals humanity already encircled and enslaved by its
imprint and its internal saboteur. An individual's imprint leaves a
person devoid of feelings and a prisoner to their mother who put it there
unconsciously. (See my essay, "The Mother's Signature.”)
Analysis
of this problem reveals that all analytic patients will fight against their
freedom with every means at their unconscious disposal. The internal saboteur,
that product of the imprint, is an agent that monitors the individual. It
constantly reports any intention to break away from the corporate state of its
unconscious ego. The dream below (Dream 1) is a good example of this operation.
Note that the patient will mutilate herself in order to stay an obedient child.
Orwell
describes fear as the prime factor in mankind’s enslavement. He is closer to
the truth of the psyche than the other writers I have mentioned. I have never
done an analysis that does not contain this essential struggle. In an analysis
the bonds of slavery are constantly revealed to the patient. This is absolutely
necessary, for the analyst requires that the patient see all the ways they have
engineered their life to be submissive to a tyrannical regime. The patient's
entire life is devoted unconsciously to this agenda.
From
this fact it is a hop, skip, and a jump into an external state mirroring such
slavery. This can more easily be effected because patients (read world) feel
they deserve to be enslaved.
Publications
by people like Hedges (and others who are chronicling man's fall into the abyss
of serfdom) are essential to a free society. They are essential in the struggle
against this happening. However valuable their work is, though, it will not be
enough unless people first escape from the unconscious prototype of this
manifest destiny. Every effort must be made in every media to put out to
the public what they are unconsciously conspiring to accomplish, else they will
wake up to an unpleasant reality—dystopia—enslavement both inward and outward.
They and their children will be in chains inside and out. There is a desperate
need for haste.
THE
INTERNAL SABOTEUR / THE “OTHER”
I
consider that the single most important element prompting patients to leave
analysis is the internal saboteur. This unconscious part of the psyche often
plans to attack the analysis in a way unanticipated by either patient or
analyst. It usually begins planning a long time before a danger signal becomes
clear to the analyst. Money is the most frequent rationale for stopping the
analysis or evading its goal. However, the real reason is fear—fear of change,
fear of going into what the patient feels to be an abyss. I have come to this
crossroad with patients again and again in my practice.
This
is of crucial importance to the individual as well as the mass unconscious.
This crafty entity keeps mankind scrambling for the necessities of survival.
When these have been obtained, it causes men and women to use their rage toward
the mother in other ways. For the pain of the imprint to shift, this aggression
must go outward to the external world. This has resulted in thousands of years
of preoccupation with war and has engendered hatred for the "other."
This hatred has been exploited by the people in power—chiefs, kings, emperors,
prime ministers, presidents—to wage wars, increasing the hatred that men have
for the "other." Over millennia it has become complicated and
inscrutable—war over religion, over wealth, over oil and other natural resources,
over different cultures and different languages—all to do with conflict with
the "other." War and its collateral damage leave scars and cause us
to plant seeds for revenge.
So
is mankind occupied in deadly pursuits, but we are fundamentally unaware of the
greater damage the internal saboteur causes to the progression of evolution of
mankind. If the fear is great within the individual, how much greater is it in
the mass unconscious? That fear makes the internal saboteur more crafty and
more powerful. It keeps mankind preoccupied with conflict, disease, famine, and
great natural disasters, all of which distracts us from concentrating on
ourselves and doing what can be done to combat these perennial problems. How
can anyone, regardless of faith or conviction, explain and excuse the
conditions of the children of the world or the precarious place that women
occupy in this world? Why has "don't ask, don't tell" been so arduous
a problem? Other countries long ago decided this was a nonissue. This fact raises
the possibility that there is a great regressive tendency to find and persecute
the "other" wherever we can. Anything that stops people from
understanding the larger issue of evolution for themselves, has to suggest the
internal saboteur is at work.
DREAM
1
I
have a patient who recently told me her dream. She is currently struggling with
leaving her family and with her mother's imprint, which for many years of her
life has been very deleterious.
In
her dream adults are in her childhood school. Something happens and she sees
that all the adults are fleeing. She pulls on the skin of her left ear and
tears it, causing it to bleed.
ASSOCIATIONS
The
associations had to do with idealizing other members of the family. These other
members, because of their wealth, could ignore their own current reality. When
I interpreted, in view of her associations, that the adults fleeing this school
were indeed being asked to leave their childhood, she said, "I would not
have to leave because my ear was bleeding." This was a self-induced wound
which indicated that she, also an adult, did not want to leave childhood and
the family of her childhood, as broken as that family was.
Our
larger family, our country, is broken too. The Republicans plan to take charge
and repeal or reverse programs that benefit millions of needy Americans. Soon
we too shall know the austerity of Ireland, Greece, Portugal, England, and
Germany. It is always this way, but it has never been so clearly visible. When
the rich and powerful have gambled and lost, the people have to pay. It doesn't
seem fair; and what can be done, if there is anything to do? Of course, no one
dares say the emperor has no clothes and no one dares say let’s stop trumped-up
wars costing trillions of dollars a year.
So
Washington pursues its heroic role in the world. Its right hand is up, touting
democracy and human rights. This I like—the moral high ground. With the
publication of Wikileaks, we find its left hand has got its fingers in every
country’s ass, trying to control, advise, corrupt, or assassinate anyone who
intractably gets in the way of government’s secret purposes. This is not the
moral high ground. In fact, it decimates our position of being a moral force.
That position can only be attained when we are moral with both hands and stop
meddling with other countries and their governments. This is akin to meddling
with one's children while they are growing up and then continuing to meddle
when they are grown up.
There
are already two powerful forces meddling with everyone's life, forces which
have never been revealed or acknowledged. We have never known this. I am
referring to the mother's imprint and its ally, the internal saboteur, which
subverts the life of our pristine souls. In fact it is these two forces that have
enabled the sorry history of mankind to unfold. As long as we are slaves to
these two hitherto unknown forces, we will be slaves in consciousness every
day. Even the masters are slaves, though they do not know it. If an entity like
Wikileaks has come into existence, it must be that Divine mind has created the
conditions for its emergence and for the consequences of its revelations. Far
too long has the playing field been uneven. It is only when it evens up that we
can get on with the evolution of our maturity.
Our
technical advances are prodigious. They have been the result of our left-brain
thinking. This usage has hypertrophied the left brain until it dominates
everything, and the emotional part has remained essentially unused and has
atrophied. A number of patients’ dreams indicate that the right brain (dealing
with emotions and the feminine unconscious) has been suffering almost forever.
Maturity cannot be gained by sending a spaceship to Mars. Nor can it be gained
by building more nuclear weapons. The world is at greater risk every day
because the people who are in charge of these weapons are disastrously immature
(although most would not recognize or acknowledge this immaturity). For there
to be growth in the right brain there must be an acknowledgement of its
existence, which means an open recognition of the unconscious, and there must
be a conscious, deliberate use of that faculty to begin solving the real
problems of the planet. This is not the time for schoolboy lunacy to invade our
lives as it invades our Washington scene and the halls of power in other
countries as well.
In
our America the parties cannot joust as if they are enemies. They must see
their roles and their jobs as looking after the best interest of the people.
The people have got to stop being patsies for all the high jinks of the wealthy
and privileged. That long-standing paradigm has been played out in every
country in the world and must come to an end. The world must stop and listen to
the feminine unconscious and to the inner dimensions it can show us. There is
no other way to go, though I don't doubt "the best and brightest"
will come up with another Band-aid solution such as that which has brought us
exactly to here. The planet has arrived at the brink of no return. The cheerless,
chilling state that Hedges described, by way of Orwell, is a reality already.
The mass unconscious is living that reality because the imprint and the
internal saboteur have seen to it. They are the unconscious internal corporate
state, and police us as surely as any dictator.
DREAM
2
The
patient from my essay “Venice Beach” presented a dream which I thought was
appropriate to include in this essay.
There
was an election represented by a marriage. Money was not accepted by the
people. The new regime had not really started since there had to be a bible
read and seconded and this was to be repeated.
COMMENTARY
If
you remember from my “Venice Beach” essay this patient has been greatly
concerned, as are many people, with the course our government has taken.
Finally I said to him, "This is your unconscious concern of the
government. You say the bible was read or seconded."
I
have talked about Obama and other politicians, who may be likened to the ruling
class. However, the mass unconscious has everything to do with the elected
officials; they represent the fears of the mass unconscious, which picks people
who will best serve these
fears. Despite the repeated question of when Obama will change his tactics, why
this, why that, the answer is he cannot change his tactics. The mass
unconscious is also greatly conservative and, when it feels it has gone too far
and deserves less than it has, it puts people in power who will ensure their
fears manifest. This is why it is so vitally important for individuals, the
country, and the world to understand the unconscious and access its knowledge.
Here
it is! This is the picture! Washington is flush with success. Lots of big
legislation has been passed. Christmas sales are good and it is said there is
an uptick in the business community, though I do not know why we should trust
that pronouncement. However, some economists (other than those talking for the
White House) have seen another picture with a grim future. They have their
facts, their arguments, and their historical precedents to prove it.
The
world is not in good shape. There is muttering about the Euro. Germany, which
is the bastion of the Euro currency, gained, but it paid a price with an
austerity plan for the workers and they are beginning to grumble.
What
is emerging from this crisis is the fact that the rich have gambled and lost.
However, they rationalize these events since they are in power and have bought
lawmakers who passed legislation which allowed them to escape the consequences
of their recklessness.
Instead,
everywhere the people have been forced to accept a stringent austerity program
in order to replenish the losses of the state, and the people are grumbling.
Not so much yet in the United States. We are a docile people, far from the
heroic posture of the Wild West and its independent-minded men. That myth has
been found useful by certain groups of people who pushed it in patriotic
slogans.
Europe
has been traumatized by over 2000 years of war and natural disasters;
consequently they are more sensible and see the value of cooperation and union
when providing essential needs to their people. We in America have yet to learn
that. This is no longer the Old West and John Doe is not a rancher with a
thousand head of cattle to protect from the homesteaders or the sheep owners.
Americans
will have to come of age. No one comes of age easily. No one goes through
adolescence singing and dancing with joy. Rather there is doubt, fear,
depression and anxiety, possibly alcohol and drugs. Everyone picks his poison.
In the end no one makes it through easily or without scars. One often wonders
whether one can get through adulthood. Adolescence is never far behind us or
below the surface; life is such that it is easy to fall backward into that
darkness.
DREAM
3
A
patient dreamed he couldn't get into a car parked in his parents’ driveway and
leave and drive away.
COMMENTARY
So
I reiterate the state of the world, being oblivious of the its' imprint, is
stationary like the patient above. These parents are among the most
destructive I have ever had to deal with. So far two of their adult children
have died. The other two are very badly emotionally damaged and have no real
life. Mankind it seems is equally stuck and it cannot get unstuck until it
comes to this clarity, to this immense awareness we all have, this enemy that
we fear beyond comprehension. In this essay I speak more about the mother's
imprint and the internal saboteur as lived by one person. It is a real
phenomenon. It causes real suffering. This person has been willing to go the
distance to bring home the message to all of us.
DREAM
4
The
old man of Venice Beach was talking. He said, "I had this terrible dream.”
There
were people to be braised, not killed. The individual was a thin, dark-
complexioned man. He was subjected to it. This was a debt. He could not escape
it. It was done. I felt it was hard to watch, almost impossible for me to
watch.
ASSOCIATIONS
Patient:
I cannot tell you what a horror it was, almost a nightmare, that people could
do this to other people. Yet I thought, as I was walking on the beach, there
was a Hitler and a Stalin and later there was a Bosnia, a Darfur, a Sudan, and
before that there was an Armenian genocide by the Turks and pogroms by Russian
Cossacks designed to kill Jews. I have only mentioned a few.
Dr.
B: What about it being a debt?
Patient:
A debt you can't escape. Sounds like a good idea, to die or declare bankruptcy.
Dr.
B: That's escaping. Wasn't this inescapable?
Patient:
Yeh. I don't know.
Dr.
B: It seems to me you were talking about karma, but is this you or are you
dreaming for the mass unconscious? After all, you are not a Communist or Nazi
or Muslim or Turk. So I think you are dreaming for the mass unconscious,
carrying a burden of this knowledge, and according to the law of cause and
effect, which is what we are about these days, really all days and all time.
Debts will be paid.
Patient:
I had another dream.
DREAM
5
We
were at a resort. There is a man, very handsome, in a beautiful suit with two
other men by his side. They looked a little less dressed-up, a bit more casual.
All were wearing dark suits. The very handsome man was saying, "I bought
this eight-story building. I bought it for security." I thought when he
said that, "Of course, you can live in the building and collect
rent." But I wondered, why was this man saying this? He seemed young, by
which I mean about forty, and strong. Why would he be concerned about security?
Then
my wife and I were in a restaurant and we were seated on the right side of the
restaurant which was divided like a movie theater. There was a screen in front.
These three men came in and sat behind us. I cannot stress enough how
impeccably dressed he was. It was also it seemed a movie house and I don't
remember that we ever got served food. A movie came on but we were so far to
the right and so close to the screen that we could not see the movie. Somehow
we were told if you held up your phone camera you would be able to see the
movie. I didn't know how that would work.
Dr.
B: Why are you dreaming these dreams? They don't seem to be issues in your
life.
Patient:
I don't know. I am not worried about security. I have my security, having
worked many, many years, and it didn't seem to me that this man would be
concerned about his security. The two people with him did not speak nor did he
speak after the comment about this eight-story building. I have no real
associations to any of this dream and I cannot imagine why I am dreaming the
content. You know what occupies me mostly: politics in America and politics
across the world, and nowhere do I see a glimmer of hope. What I do see is lots
of denial and more of the same, people in high places saying the same thing.
The wars go on, corruption goes on. It is an endlessly boring and depressing
cycle and I wonder when it is all going to fall down.
I
thought a lot about this dream. I felt drawn to it and compelled by it.
Dr.
B: What do you think did that?
Patient:
It was this striking looking man. Why did he need this building for security?
That did not make sense. You see, I am thinking the way you do, or I try. After
all, he was young and had two aides or friends. He looked wealthy. He looked
strong. He looked like an entrepreneur and he looked like an old movie actor, a
Tyrone Power, Gregory Peck type.
Dr.
B: What did you conclude?
Patient:
I thought about the number eight. You see, you have taught me well, and I have
my own long life to dwell upon and make comparisons of relationships from my
experience. When I was that age, about forty, I was full of passion and the
feeling I could do anything. Security was not on my mind. Who needs security?
Old people. We have Social Security, thanks to FDR.
Dr.
B: True, and all of this thinking and puzzling out is wonderful. Let me ask you
this. Agreed, old people need security and should have it. I think I will give
away the answer in asking the question. What else is old and needs social
security?
Patient:
(Laughing) I got you. The planet and the people on the planet and the people yet
to come will need the security of their lives.
Dr.
B: You make my work easy. I feel l can say, as one old man to another, that we
are closer to this entity called Source consciousness, and I think the two
aides in the dream makes three. So I deduce that this is the holy trinity you
are dreaming about. The building represents mankind. It represents the planet.
We all belong, so to speak, to him. We are his production. We are part of his
being. The man in your dream is looking to see and to tell us we are secure and
we have nothing essentially to fear no matter how grave or dark it appears, no
matter how we think or feel. This is a fantastic message you are bringing.
Patient:
I am reluctant to agree but I see no other way to look at it.
Dr.
B: What did you puzzle out about the second part?
Patient:
In the dream I did not think these things out as we have done here. I simply
thought we came to a high-class resort and were going to a high-class
restaurant. I was surprised to find rows of seats and no tables. Now I think
the meal was the film. In thinking on my feet I would say the meal must be the movie. That is the message we got from where we sat on the right side,
but we could not see. These guys were immediately behind us. They left before
we did. In fact, I don't recall us leaving. The dream ended and that was all. I
just couldn't see the movie. It must be, I'm thinking out loud here, the Divine
giving new ways of feeling, thinking, and being on earth. Now I am thinking, if
I am right, that heaven and earth are being combined. That we are being
recognized here on earth and in heaven. Perhaps our phone camera can take up
the vision of that script and perhaps there is a recording going on in our
unconscious that will allow us on earth to see our future; that we will later
see and live the gift of the Divine in what will be a new world. I can't
believe I said what I have just said, but I did, so I will let it stand.
Dr.
B: Well, I think to a lot of people your comments would seem very fanciful.
However, there are many sci-fi movies that are made with equally fanciful
ideas. Isn't that true?
Patient:
With all I have spoken about here, about our lives on the planet, about how
desperate people must feel in their beleaguered countries beset by political
rivalry, about politicians scrambling for power and all that it brings, about a
willingness to kill anyone if it will bring victory and power, I think of the
four horsemen of the apocalypse. There is just no way to patch up the world and
all its people. Something new has to be designed and we have to be designed and
new, so to speak.
Dr.
B: We have talked about this many times and it has to be possible, just as your
mind has turned around from its pessimism and darkness. Only we cannot analyze
the world as we analyze you. The world currently does not even know they have
an unconscious. We need a game change, a real game change.
DREAM
6
I
end with a dream of a patient who was in her home town and sees a young boy
going to school. The boy sees a man in a tree. The man comes down and gives the
boy a chocolate bar. It is covered with worms. The patient (the young boy)
complains. The man says, "Flick the worms off."
ASSOCIATIONS
The
associations led to the fact that worms were good. They aerated the soil.
Likewise sometimes people have to be seduced into the unconscious, the worms
being essential to aerate that soil.
The
times are gone for fables and fairytales where lessons might be learned and
dangers avoided by the thoughtful. These times call for the straight-out
identification of the facts. People like Hedges and a few others who are
mightily concerned with trend of the present are doing that and confront us
with that present and the future of captivity.
CONCLUSION
The
universe is run by laws. Cause and effect is one of them. We on earth are
subject to these laws. To pay one's debts—whether individual or mass, one
person or one country, all people and all countries—is another karmic message.
There is such an entity—cause and effect. Each of us is called upon on a
personal level to bring ourselves back to the center, back to balance, to make
the dynamic changes, to break down the old customs of seeking old feelings
which are a comfort in our discomfort. We must live so that we may take on the
new levels of Divine light passing through us, creating a world in which
compassion is the greater part of our living.
