THE OLD MAN AGAIN AND AN INQUIRY INTO THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (String Theory)

by Bernard W. Bail, M.D.

PATIENT HISTORY

The patient, who also appears in my essay “Venice Beach”, is a man of elder years.  He was born in a Mid-western city.  He has had a successful career over many decades. Now he is old and plagued by physical problems which, luckily, are not life threatening but exceedingly annoying and about which he complains endlessly.  He came because he knew that I, being old, would understand his complaints, indeed his fear.  Could I help him with that?  I thought we should try.  So this patient is not about early anxieties or about current relationships.  This work is not about his successes in life of which he has had no small measure.

DREAM ONE

I have a long, complicated dream about a bank robbery involving millions and millions of dollars, much in gold bullion. I wasn't sure whether it was an ancient site and that gold was found, much, much gold.  And when it was revealed people ran amuck.  One old man and woman carried a section of the bullion and put it in the hallway closet of this huge new complex.  My friend, Ted, now dead, ran down the hallway in exuberance kicking his feet high.  A man was in the bank office saying he was suing the bank, that it was the end of their scam.  Only one scene was very disturbing.  I see a man stab his friend in the neck two times and then cut him some more.  His friend did not die for a week.  The people around, and there were a number of them, men and women, stood transfixed and horrified.  Then the man who did the cutting sat down and cut himself to bleed.  I wondered why did no one call 911.  No one did.

I waited for the patient to speak.  He was silent for a long time and finally spoke.

Patient:  You and I have talked about the state of the country for a long time intermittently.  It seems that my dream is about the bank bailout and the Wall Street bailout, about the AIG bailout and the direct theft of money, the people's money, from the people to these entities.  You know it is beyond all understanding that this has gone on and the people have not rebelled.  It is beyond understanding that there is a health bill before Congress with a public option that doesn't appear will be passed or, if passed, so watered down as to do little about the essential problem which is to keep the insurance industry in check.  It becomes more known that most of the members of Congress are supported by the insurance industry, the health industry and the pharmaceutical industry.  They really have no concern for the people.  I could use words like deplorable, unconscionable but they have become platitudes.  They don't seem to have any emotional meaning.

Dr. B:  What about this seeming to be an ancient site?

Patient:  I think that what's happening has happened so many times in the history of man where those in power simply took what they wanted.  It is what the government has done.  The government, of course, being all the interests controlling those who are supposed to govern.

Dr. B:  What about your friend?

Patient:  Well, my friend has been dead quite a number of years.  He had a modicum of success back East.  I suppose one could say he lived the good life.  He was a good person.  He was what people would call a "liberal".  But you know being a "liberal" is being a person whose heart and sympathies go out for the dispossessed.  It was strange to see him run down the hall kicking up his heels.  Maybe he thought with all that gold at last the people could be taken care of.

The patient was silent.

Dr. B:  What do you make of the horrifying scene at the end?

Patient:  It was horrifying to see the one man stab his friend in the throat two times and, when he didn't die on the spot, begin to carve him up.  I don't know what that means.  It was even further horrifying when this man sat down and began to cut his chest, slice after slice.  All of us stood petrified, fearful.  I suppose wondering would he come and do the same thing to us, so petrified that nobody could call for help.

Silence.

Dr. B:  What are you thinking?

Patient:  I am thinking of a newscast I saw about Africa.  The reporter said a million children die of malaria every year.  A million children and adults die of starvation every year.  They said the rate of blindness in Ethiopia is in the hundreds of thousands.  They call it trachoma.  You probably know what that is.  In the last 60 or more years I have seen this newscast over and over.  It is still happening.  I feel overwhelmed.  I don't even really know what words I can use to describe how I feel.  I feel I could cry forever.

Silence

Dr. B:  What are you thinking?

Patient:  I am thinking of Homer and the Trojan War.  I was thinking that we ought to reinstate the custom of that time.

Dr. B:  What custom?

Patient:  You know it was the custom that when a leader goes to war he must sacrifice a child.

The patient continues.

Patient:  It is as if the population is saying, "You send our children to war and they might not come back.  You must show that your intention is for the good of the people.  We will see that good intention when you sacrifice a child."  So Agamemnon sacrificed Iphigenia, his daughter.  The consequence was a ten-year war with Troy supposedly over the abduction of Helen by Paris.  But obviously Agamemnon had reasons of his own.  As a consequence, Troy, a cultured and rich nation, was destroyed.  Agamemnon returning home was murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra.  She never forgave him for the murder of their daughter.

Patient continues.

Patient:  I think Homer is remembered but no one takes to heart and soul his message that war is no solution to problems, which in any case resolved into a personal problem between Paris and Helen and her husband.  Men died, Troy died and Agamemnon died.  Iphigenia, his daughter, was sacrificed.  (So much for parental love).

There is a serious message here.  Leaders who seek war or to perpetuate war will pay a price.  Their people will pay a price as well as those vanquished.  There is no gain to war except in money and power for those in power.  In the end a victory will remain a pyrrhic victory for there is no gainsaying the cost and the cost of bringing things into balance.

Dr. B:  I could not have said it better.  Wisdom comes with seeing events happen over and over marveling over how the young who are ebullient and omnipotent, especially the young in power, make messes they personally do not have to address.

I am for your reinstatement of the old custom.  Let it be started as the rule.  I would extend this rule to all members of Congress who have the duty and power to vote on war.

First, I think you are dreaming about the mass unconscious.  I think it feels it could cry forever.  The state of our humanity that will stand transfixed and not help when there is a need to help is beyond remarkable; the billions in gold bullion, ancient site where it has been kept and found as it is being revealed it is being stolen, and humanity running amuck.  This is important for all of us.  I think it means we have everything one might ever need, whether it is the opulence of money or the opulence of health or the opulence of all layers that any of us are seeking.  It is already here.  Then there is the old couple.  They hide the money meaning they represent the old patterns of thinking which hides what is opulence because at that point humanity runs amuck.  We do not know what to do with our opulence and what happens – we have the cutting scene - which means we, humanity, are still so afraid of ourselves that we will let ourselves die.

Finally there is the opulence of the unconscious.  You know how you have trembled at times in the face of it.  I do not mind saying all of my patients have trembled, many have left and some have stayed to look at the truth within themselves.  You have had to discover your courage.  So must everyone.  This is what all people have to learn – the courage to enter the cycles of the unconscious, the courage to face what is in the unconscious and to know each one of us is in charge of changing it.  The past is not changing it and will not change it.

Patient:  I didn't know who they were.  I was surprised being that they were old that they could carry the bullion that they did, stashing it away.  It would be hard to estimate the amount of money that would be worth.  But they put it into this closet so that nobody could access it.

Dr. B:  Well, we might think that because the man is old I could say it's you, but I don't think it is you.  I think the man and woman hiding the bullion represent tradition and tradition wishes to preserve itself feeling that the only real wealth is in tradition, especially if you are the master and you have the money.  Altogether I think we will have to wait until mankind comes out of its paralysis and begins to see how to manage things in a way that life has never been managed before.

Several days later the patient reports this dream.

DREAM TWO

One of the networks wanted to put on a play.  I couldn't remember by whom.  It was a name I knew in the dream, not now.  They were a bit late in starting the reading and the acting.  It went a bit rough at the beginning.  I was saying, "Yes, I know what that feels like."

Patient:  I was puzzled by what this dream was about but I have learned enough in my work with you to think back to what I was talking about and thinking and I remember saying, "There will have to be a change in the world, a big, big change.  Something completely different then what we know now."  It seems every solution that we try is a variant of something we have already tried.  Consequently it has little effect.  I said this has to be something entirely different and new, never before seen or done on earth.

Dr. B:  Based on this one association and what we have been talking about, I think you already know what your dream means that there might well be a new modality in the world.  But being new it will be rough and many things might have to be smoothed out so we have to wait and see what that new modality will be.  We have to be on the lookout for it.

A few days later......

DREAM THREE

I was at an international meeting and people were eating at a table in nooks and crannies outside the hotel.  The meeting was apparently held in a South American city, I don't know the name.  I liked one of the women at a table and I came back to tell her the others were meeting now and to come and join them.  I then see a large group of women were hauling a long cart of cakes of all kinds.  I was thinking this meeting is in some poor South American country like Argentina or Brazil.  I think why didn't I eat outside.  That seemed to be "cool" like the kids say.  I was dressed in my pajamas and bathrobe.  Later I am pulling along heavy cart with all kinds of candy as we go along.  The big boss links the two carts.  Some candies fall off the cart.  They can be taken by whoever wants them.  And I am thinking there will be a lot of poor kids who will be grabbing these candies.  I am thinking if any of them contain dark chocolate.

Patient:  It has been a long time since I have attended meetings of any kind but I did use to go to international meetings in my business.  Of course attractive women are always nice and dreams seem to make them so desirable.  But you know at my age I don't think much about desirable women.

Dr. B:  What about these carts of cakes and candies and what about being in your PJ's?

Patient:  Well, if I am in PJ's and bathrobe I guess it means I am very comfortable in this setting.  I don't have to put on for anybody.  People know me or they don't.  It simply doesn't matter.  As far as eating outside, that reminds me of being in Europe and how much I like the European bistros.  I don't think I have ever been to South America but one hears and sees a lot on TV about the poverty in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and elsewhere in South America.

Dr. B:  Who's the big boss?

The patient laughs.

Patient:  I guess you would say that's God but you know I don't believe in God.  As far as the candy and the cakes, they were a wonderful assortment of that kind of genre.  There again I am really too old to eat really much of cake or candy except I will take a piece of dark chocolate because my doctor says it is good for me.

Dr. B:  I think what you are dreaming about is the result of the past sessions we have had over the past few weeks.  Your concern about the mass unconscious, the people in different parts of the world whom you sense are in pain and I think that this dream is a reply.  When you ask the attractive woman to come to the meeting, you are asking the feminine unconscious to join you, to be available to you, because it is from that creativity answers will come.  It is clear that you are comfortable at this point in your life.  The carts of candy and cake are not so much candy or cake in reality but they are expressions of the delights that the unconscious has for you and for mankind if they will open their minds and hearts there will be delights that nothing in the real physical world can offer.

COMMENTARY

The tragedy of the world today lies in its open and/or tacit acceptance of the most barbaric practices that have ever been invented in the history of mankind.  Torture of every means has been tried and human beings have been subjected to the "beyond words" experience of pain and fear.

Even animals that are killed do not experience this long process of dying.  Their hunting and killing is humane by human standards.

All countries, all governments are complicit openly or secretly and while these practices continue the pity is that we cannot embark on the most urgent of missions - to explore the domain of the unconscious which I have written about below and roughly outlined its structure.  Since all of history is contained in the layers of the unconscious mind, there is where we must train people to approach it and learn about in themselves so that they may be able to go further and deeper in the present and the future ferreting out the truth of the universe.  Hard science is just one way of venturing into the knowledge of the universe.  The unconscious is the only other way that can gain us indisputably sterling knowledge.

It is unimaginable what could be done for all of us on earth and those to come if the resources of man would be turned to the true last frontier, the heart and soul of man.

In the identification of the child some forty years ago, the child would not begin to develop its awareness until three years of age - the cognitive mind.  Now souls are evolving very quickly.  There are souls who are becoming aware of their personal selves - cognitive mind - by age two and some before that.

So cognitive mind develops between two and three.  After that third year stage the personal mind takes a more active view of the earth and more of a response from its unconscious mind gathered

from that womb event and less of its awareness of its Divine mind.

Our individuated quality called our soul is an aspect of the Divine or Divine mind.  It is on a journey called incarnation and our experience on earth.  The very moment of our conception the soul center is indeed activating Divine mind in the individual nature. The mind is already birthing reality.  It is contained in a body now growing in the womb of the mother and while it grows the unconscious mind is developing.  The unconscious mind has two striations; one level is the Divine mind, the other level is the unconscious mind that will be used to exist in the human form.

Now as the baby self grows there is a slight development of the cognitive mind, very slight.  It is in this form and state because there is an individual being created.

At birth the Divine mind and the unconscious mind are pretty much intact.  The spirit of the soul continues its interaction from Divine mind center and the unconscious self remembers its Divine mind center and it is already beginning its identification of the cognitive self.  During this time the baby is taking in the impressions of the world through the belly and the mind of the mother.

When a child is born, the unconscious mind remains strong easily feeling its development with its spirit or Divine mind consciousness.  As each day goes by the unconscious level of Divine mind is taking its rest in the unconscious of the baby.  More development of the unconscious usage of how the child will survive in its human form is becoming stronger.

STRIATIONS OF THE MIND

In the very depths of the striations is the allness.  Everything in the grand universe and every soul carries it.  Every existence carries it.  We are never separated from Divine mind or Divine knowing.

We have been taught to gain that knowledge by entering the holy temple in ourselves, to enter with altered states of consciousness; for example meditation, and to flow with it to find that core that is called the monad, the single cell, the single Source we call the Divine.

Obviously there are gifted individuals who can achieve this transcendental state.  Christ was one of these and having discovered the monad - the Source – in himself he could proclaim the kingdom of God is within.  Today, with the discovery of psychoanalysis and its development, such accession is possible through the arduous work with one’s unconscious, for it is the only way to apprehend that state unless one happens to incarnate with that gift available.

As a consequence we have to consider would it be possible, if this knowledge would be available to every human being on earth, to have wars, with their maiming and killing, for then everyone would have the stark realization that they were killing the Godhead itself.

The internal saboteur is created by one karma, the karmic reality that calls us to attention so that we might make our changes in this incarnation.

The birth experience contains the challenge of separating from the ethereal dynamic of knowing the Source to the physical dynamic of feeling separate from the Source.  This weakens the psyche.  There are countless impressions made upon the psyche during the sojourn in the womb and the emotionality being experienced by the mother transfers to the fetus.  Yet the further and the same experiences can be explored by the baby in reference to the father from the experience of the outer world impressing itself on the psyche of the mother.

These vibrations create an effect and they are the saboteur as it is developing.  The saboteur will take on other striations of awareness called safety or acceptance or rejection.  It contains a greater secret.  It will push the individual out of the fear but, out of his/her desire for the saboteur, will say "you are not comfortable" for the desire of the saboteur is to seek comfort.  The saboteur will say "I am not balanced".  There will be the push to find the balance.  The saboteur will say "I am not loved".  There will be the push to find love.  It is a double edged sword.

STRIATIONS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

All cells in the body have striations of consciousness.  These are aspects of consciousness by which each of us lives.  There are dimensionalities and we live within some of these.  We are conscious of what we are doing.  In the unconscious there are many striations and these contain multiple experiences of life having an effect playing out from the unconscious to the conscious aspects of our reality.  If we can grasp them for their best meaning then they serve us well.  They can also serve us badly.  At times there are striations deep in the unconscious that we do not recognize or their effect, positive or negative, layers upon layers.  All of these layers are cyclical and in striations immaterial dipped into or voided.  If we avoid them we are unaware of it.  Our conscious desire to know enables us to dip into these striations.  If we do not wish to know, it doesn't mean that these bands, really of energy, will not take control.  It is then the automatic vibration that controls since the conscious ego exhibits no wish to know and therefore to control.  Every cell has this and, therefore, the number of striations are probably unimaginable considering the number of cells in our bodies.

The study of genetics teaches us that DNA is in every cell, contained in every cell is the DNA print.  Therefore in every cell is the essence of existence.  From here it is a short jump to scientists attempting to discover the “theory of everything” (TOE).  So far it has not been done.  So far string theory holds its place in front as the way to explain the universe.  It deals with the dimensionalities of the universe.  We as humans can ascertain three plus time.  There are all in all eleven.  Science came to have five different theories about string theory until someone discovered that these five different theories were five different ways of looking at the same thing.  So far no way has been found to detect the majority.  Obviously many people are working on this

problem that to the unpracticed eye looks like a state of chaos.  It may be when science can come to the theory of all, then the dimensions of the human mind will also be discovered in striations as postulated.  It may be when one enumerates the dimensions of the mind the physical problems will be solved since for a satisfactory solution not only must the physical universe be explained but the mental universe as well.  My hunch is that the mental universe solution will come first and give the hard science people clues as to the solution of the cosmos from the largest to the smallest of bodies.
